A Beginner’s Guide
to the Films of Connie Chan
Where to start? With approximately one-third
of Connie’s more than 230 films now available on VCD or DVD and most of them
without English subtitles, it can be a bit daunting for those who want to
sample the charms of Hong Kong cinema’s brightest star. An obvious place
to begin is the handful of films that do have subs. Some of Connie’s best films, however,
do not have subtitles, and I encourage you to take the plunge and
check out some of these classics. To help guide you, here are recommendations
from myself and four other Chan fans. Two films in particular stand
out by being on four of our five lists and can be justly considered excellent
introductions to the amazing Chan Po Chu: The Black Killer, a contemporary action
film with action choreography by Lau Kar Leung and Tong Gai; and
Opposite Love, a romantic
melodrama directed by Chor Yuen.
