Sue Guttilla’s Top Picks:

1) Aftermath of a Fire (1966)
Chan is paired up with Siao Fong Fong in this mohup (swordplay) film. The chemistry between them is just fantastic, and the plot is intricate enough to keep your interest.

2) The Black Killer (1967)
Chan plays two roles, as a brother and sister, in this modern action film. It’s amazing to see them talking to one another! The final fight scenes are awesome, especially when Chan goes one on one against Sek Kin.

3) The Reincarnation of Lady Plum Blossom (1968)
A Tong Tik-San classic, the last script he wrote before he died. The songs are wonderful, and Chan’s performance is a must see. Nam Hung sings quite well and does a good job playing the ghost Lee Wei Liang.

4) Eternal Love (1966)
Siao and Chan play a pair of lovers not meant to be. Chan’s singing is both emotional and appealing the ears. Although Siao doesn’t sing for herself, she gives an excellent performance as the estranged wife.

5) Opposite Love (1968)
One of those rare movies where you can really feel the characters. Here Chan plays a girl whose boyfriend goes back to Singapore; she follows suit only to find out her adopted brother loves her.

6) The Black Rose (1965)
Cute movie about two sisters who rob the poor and give to the rich. Though Chan is not the main character, she is quite versatile and shows off her excellent martial arts skills.

7) Young, Pregnant and Unmarried (1968)
The funniest movie I have ever seen. Chan pretends to be pregnant to protect her sister. Lui Kei and his parents are confused. The whole situation is a riot of laughs. You’ve gotta see this one.

8) Beauty in the Mist (1968)
Chan plays a girl who dies in a fire almost twenty years ago but somehow comes back as a ghost in the day to meet up with Lu Kei. The songs here are great, and the story and reason she came back are quite interesting.

9) The Charming Little Bird (1967)
Here again, there are two Chans: one an airline stewardess (looking real nice in that outfit) and the other a delivery boy. Lots of comic relief when she pretends to be the delivery boy and vice versa.
